Sherlock - Minimalist Posters

These have helped greatly in getting over a recent obsession.
I am addicted to the BBC's adaptation of Sherlock Holmes.
I don't think i'm the sort to go to this length for a TV show, and I watch and enjoy many.

I've always wanted to have my own series of minimalist posters for something and I was a bit pressed for time, so I've kept them very simple. Had fun making them :) Took me a day to make them while I waited for prints from another project.
I have 2 more left though...

There are numerous takes one can have when everything is "minimal"... I chose to go with a more figurative approach. one route was also to iconise the key objects that define each episode or case. However similar things had already been done. I'd like to screen print these, so kept them down to 2 colors. Let me know if there are any takers out there? :)

Diwali Greetings

This years hand painted seasons greetings Diwali posters done on stock paper. Each one done in under 7 minutes.
We made over a hundred I think, each one with a different stroke, type and force. Some good and others better. Thats the fun of it all being hand painted.
My in-house calligrapher, Govind, made these. He's great with Devnagri. Will put up some more later.

Helped Vidha put together the Mumbai Film Festival Posters.. It was fun working on the last few days of it, she's been at it for a few months!

Both of us sat together one evening and tried to boil down what would be iconic about the watching a "Mumbai Film Festival"
... when my dad came along and started telling us little stories around filmmaking. One of which was about the film cans and reels being taken by handcart or a cycle from one theatre to the next between the 3:15 and the 3:30 show.

Finally at the end of the day, even a film takes a cycle, or a handcart and has to travel amongst the everyday. That's Mumbai :)

I've decided i'm putting the magazines lying around the office to some better use... Also try a bit of realistic rendering.. Its convenient to shy away from it... I've also taken out the watercolour kit now.. its bin drying up :( Anybody want to post me a spraycan? I've been using a toothbrush... You can send me those too though.. :)

Been illustrating for GQ... and its great fun! Its allowing me to vent almost.. trying something new with every illustration, some work and some don't and they have to be redone, but getting an idea of what works and what doesnt for a reader. The magazine comes with its specifics, the specific "visually literate" demographic it caters to :P

Attempting different concepts and styles as per the article... its a quick timeline that is set...

Got the opportunity to illustrate for the GQ in the November issue :)

This article was called "the Manifesto"... its about how the nature of The Man in particular has changed from that of the non political, barbaric and raw to that of one who minces his words and now asks for permission from his wife to do things... we don't know if this is for the better or worse but yeah I guess its true... he picks pink wallpaper for the house and makes polite conversation with his wife's friends... the article is almost a before and after where the man of the past looks at today's guy and says "You Suck!" hmmmmm...

Ahhh.. boardwalk, beaches, blazing sun with bits of rain.. hot bikini girl on the beach who features a little after this... and amazing breakfast buffets :) Not to mention swimming races and the bouy that we dared to touch far out in the sea... 'Jaws' popping into my head every 30 seconds... Angad's friendly blue fish and its family that lived a foot under the water :P
I wouldn't forget the Burjaya, it is one of the best hotels i've been in :) Not to forget the prying monkeys

The red flag that warned people of the tide, well for us it was a warning that Angad had probably knocked over the coast guard.

Leeches. Leeches. Leeches amidst the 3rd oldest rainforest in the world! Taman negara with its canopy walks, barking deer, Fish and rice and reaally long boat rides...

aaaannnd the checkered bikini! she suspiciously kept looking over her glasses at me drawing her.... all was forgiven when she saw the sketch :P

Still trying to balance out each page as a whole... will add the text and the photo collage bits last i guess. I have a style for every chapter in the book, but what binds them together is still being figured out along the way...

What do i appreciate about Bangalore as a city? What would i like it to be known for?

Especially when i ve been asked to brand it! For my illustration course, i decided to identify bangalore as a city recognised for its performing arts. This would mean, creating a mock up for a new face or identity for Bangalore as a contemporary, cosmopolitain city and to visually interpret the term 'contemporary' with relation to the arts and to the present ways of life in Bangalore.

Creating contrast between the traditional and modern was hard, especially when the arts are moving toward contemporarising the old. Bangalore is moving towards constructing a cross cultural platform where it shares, takes inspiration, exchanges at a global level hence it was difficult to identify the new cultural symbols that would lend themselves to the city the country and internationally. Point being : i need time to do more research :)

This heavy use of surface water is leading to growing conflicts between urban and rural users and also to overexploitation.

Sar - Pugal, Rajasthan : a travelogue

Sar : A formation of land caused by rivulets of water that converge into a catchment area. This area over time becomes rich and fertile but hard to access and cultivate using primitive tools for agriculture.

I curse myself everytime i head out anywhere without my sketch book and most of the times its sheer laziness. The thought of removing things and packing them back in and those materials and things and there's only so much i can do if i'm living out of my suitcase.

But there's a certain trick and charm in that as well and i discovered that this time. A nomadic sort of being in a way and sight + sound as provocation to record. The desert just capacitates you in a way. I let my camera be my tourist and my diary took over everything else.

This bit features somewhere just outside of Bangalore... its called Savandurg and its one huge monolith of granite.
Its like a balancing act... you have some insane piling-up of forms and its briliant to sketch them. How best can you capture that?? Its huge, monotonous and difficult to get. I tried... what i've got here is more of a study in quick drawings..what kind of line defined this best? or maybe stroke? did capturing the light help define its shape?
"ask yourself as many questions as you can" i was told. And it helps.

i tried splitting it up into shapes and then adding the actual form...

We did quite a few assignments after this sketching trip. This one was a 2 hour excercise where we were allowed to freak out with all the sketches we had produced. Basically take all your drawings and create a composition out of it. You cold make a statement if you wanted to. Ours is a sort of Building cake commenting on the mess that has become of MG rd and other areas around it.

It was interesting to know how designers and artists are involved in the planning and development of city areas and other places. We were focussing on heritage sites and in keeping a certain level of homogenity in landscape. Being sensitive to the surroundings and pre-existing structures when planning. Mg road (originally being a military base) is home to quite a few old buildings but newer construction work is done with no consideration for what already exists.

Thats what we tried to bring about in this artwork. Mess. telegraph poles, wires, shops, brands, advertising, bilboards, dirt and in all of that those forgotten structures.

We worked on it as a pair.

the diaries

I've picked up this habit from my uncle. Collecting diaries and filling them up.... he just sits and doodles in them. Stacks and stacks of beautiful books with brilliant paper in just pen work - an occasional hint of colour here and there... He never thinks when he doodles..or he does but it hardly concerns what he's putting down on paper... i liked that bit.... my friends call it my trance when i sit at a stretch and just fill up pages one after an another... and its fun to flip through these books later... i read whatever i want from things i'd drawn some time ago...

In this one, I aimed at creating an image, slightly unsettling or intriguing using cut-outs,props and sets. I didnt want to use the computer for anything. The pictures were meant to have a slight narative to them...to provoke the viewer to think of a situation or to arouse curiosity... (this applies only to the first 2 pictures for now)

This is part of a project that i'd done last year... it was a short story that i'd created for an illustration course. I went through quite a process looking for the style i wanted to follow. The original look for the story never really worked out since i spent too much time per frame. I had a week and a half to complete the whole thing and i couldnt keep looking.... finally i came up with this one where i used photographs, illustrations, traces, the computer and mixed them all up...
